Summary

Pudsey Bolton Royd Primary School in Leeds has a large number of EAL pupils, so staff focus on improving the literacy of the whole school by taking steps to ensure learning is encompassed in every aspect of school life.

The school, which serves a predominantly South Asian community, has fully explored the potential of learning outside of the classroom through growing vegetables, cooking and other outdoor activities.

A visit from a "cooking bus" and the annual school potato growing competition are all part of the school's commitment to give pupils learning experiences that widen their knowledge and experience of the world around them, and provide an exciting and vital learning platform.

Philosophy classes and the school's buddy system also work cross culturally to instil confidence and encourage learners to find a voice and a place in this vibrant school community.
