It can be a difficult subject, but a Hampshire school has devised a project that gives citizenship a sound practical basis and truly engages its pupils with the local community. Parish People follows the yearly "Good Citizens" project run by Marchwood School and the Marchwood Parish Council.
When a group of people in Marchwood were at primary school, they took part in the competition. Nine years later, they used the skills they'd learnt and get a skate park built.
This programme looks at how that competition continues to benefit pupils, teachers and the local community and makes citizenship a dynamic and practical part of school life.
We look at how the competition runs and what it does, including:
- How it acts as a starting point for citizenship work throughout the term
- How it engages the pupils with their local community
- The invaluable insight it gives to the parish council into the desires of its younger citizens
- How it gives citizenship a strong practical basis
